Ireland is a popular destination for internationally qualified nurses, with a well-established healthcare system, high professional standards and a diverse working environment. The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) is the statutory regulator responsible for the Register of Nurses and Midwives.
Internationally qualified nurses must have their nursing qualification assessed and meet NMBI's current registration and English-language requirements. Depending on the assessment outcome, a compensation measure such as an adaptation programme or aptitude test may be required.
The individual route depends on the NMBI assessment. Where a compensation measure is required, candidates may complete an adaptation programme involving supervised clinical practice or an aptitude test through an approved provider. Preparation should be aligned with current Irish nursing standards and the route communicated by NMBI.
NMBI registration can open opportunities in hospitals, community healthcare and other nursing settings in Ireland. Registration is separate from employment and immigration; applicants must also satisfy the relevant employment permit, visa and immigration requirements.
