NCLEX

National Council Licensure Examination preparation for nurses.

Overview

About NCLEX

The NCLEX (National Council Licensure Examination) is a standardized licensure examination used by nursing regulatory boards to determine whether a candidate is ready for entry-level nursing practice. The Next Generation NCLEX (NGN), launched April 1, 2023, places greater emphasis on clinical judgment and decision-making through innovative item types.

Eligibility

Who can apply?

Eligibility is determined by the nursing regulatory authority for the jurisdiction in which the candidate seeks licensure. Preparation should begin with credential and education review, regulatory application requirements and confirmation of the candidate's eligibility before exam scheduling.

Exam / Assessment

What should you prepare for?

RN candidates answer a minimum of 85 and a maximum of 150 items within a five-hour examination period. The examination uses the NCLEX test plan and includes clinical-judgment case studies. NGN uses polytomous scoring for certain item types, allowing partial credit through scoring methods such as plus/minus, 0/1 and all-or-nothing scoring. Clinical judgment includes recognizing cues, analyzing cues, prioritizing hypotheses, generating solutions, taking action and evaluating outcomes. Content areas include physiological integrity, safe and effective care, health promotion and maintenance, and psychosocial integrity.
